The Walker's Haute Route is an extraordinary trail that stretches 221 kilometers (137 miles) through the breathtaking French and Swiss Alps, from Chamonix to Zermatt. Reaching heights of 2,987 meters (9,799 feet), with a total elevation gain of 15,200 meters (49,867 feet), it's a challenging but rewarding trek.
While the full route usually takes about 14 days, the Walker’s Haute Route East offers a condensed version for those with less time. This seven-day, 70-mile adventure begins in Arolla and ends in Zermatt, traversing some of the highest peaks in the Alps. Though tough, it’s an exhilarating experience that combines stunning mountain landscapes, charming Alpine villages, and delicious local food.
The journey starts with an easy valley walk from Arolla to La Sage, followed by four high mountain stages, each featuring a mountain pass of around 2,800 to 2,900 meters. Along the way, you'll stay in unique Alpine huts like the Cabane du Moiry and Europahütte, where you can soak in views of glaciers and snow-capped peaks. The trek ends with the iconic two-day Europaweg traverse, offering panoramic views above the valley before descending into the magical village of Zermatt.
